Minion Park - Japan
Immersive Placemaking at Scale
Opened as the world’s largest Minion-themed area, Minion Park transforms a prime waterfront section of Universal Studios Japan into a chaotic, vibrant neighborhood pulled directly from Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise. A masterclass in environmental storytelling, the land features “haphazard” architectural details, oversized props, and interactive streetmosphere that mimic the whimsical aesthetic of the films. The area goes beyond simple decoration, integrating retail and dining locations like “Sweet Surrender” and the “Delicious Me!” cookie kitchen into the narrative fabric, creating a cohesive, 360-degree guest experience that maintains high energy and immersion from the moment guests step inside the zone.
Anchoring the land is Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, a motion simulator attraction that invites guests into Gru’s laboratory to undergo “Minion training.” The Japan installation distinguishes itself with a massive, wrap-around dome projection system that offers a significantly wider field of view than its global counterparts. Utilizing state-of-the-art RGB laser projection technology, the attraction delivers hyper-realistic 3D visuals with superior brightness and color gamut. This technical precision, synchronized with motion-based vehicles, allows for a seamless blend of physical sets and digital media, successfully suspending disbelief as guests careen through a heartwarming and hilarious adventure.
how qco entertainment helped
QCO Entertainment Consulting was retained to oversee the complete lifecycle—design, installation, and commissioning—of the audio-visual and projection ecosystems for the entire Minion Park expansion. This mandate covered not only the signature Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction but also the integrated media for area development and retail venues.
Leveraging Founder Paul Cuoco’s specific expertise with this ride system (having previously led its refurbishment from Back to the Future to The Simpsons Ride in Hollywood and Orlando), QCO served as the technical bridge between legacy infrastructure and next-generation standards. In partnership with Holovis, the team iterated on previous designs to engineer and deploy a world-first Dome RGB laser projection system, setting a new benchmark for clarity and immersion.
